"Breaking Gender Stereotypes: Empowering Women in Taiwan"

The exhibition sheds light on the historical context of Taiwan's past, characterized by the prevalent practice of favoring sons over daughters and gender-based discrimination. This societal and cultural norm subjected Taiwanese women to customary constraints, leading to their subjugation or belittlement in significant life events such as marriage and childbirth. However, as time progresses, traditional notions and customs that once ignored women's rightful entitlements have been significantly transformed in Taiwan. In today's modern society, characterized by progress and change, a more open and liberated mindset prevails, allowing both genders to develop on equal footing. This shift towards equality and diversity signifies a significant milestone on Taiwan's journey toward a more balanced and inclusive future.

  • Marriage Customs:

Traditionally, marriage ceremonies were often skewed towards favoring the groom's family and perpetuated gender stereotypes. Over time, Taiwan's wedding rituals have transitioned towards more rational, open, and diverse approaches. Innovative and creative wedding styles have emerged, reflecting equality and mutual respect, regardless of gender, resulting in unique and memorable stories for the couples entering the next phase of their lives.

  • Festive and Ritual Traditions:

Traditional festive and ritual customs have historically shown gender differentiation, particularly evident during holiday celebrations and funeral ceremonies. Changing perspectives in modern times have given new meaning and relevance to these customs, combining old traditions with new thinking.

  • Childbirth Customs:

The deeply ingrained preference for sons in traditional society has manifested in practices such as male surnames and the prioritization of male offspring. Statistics reveal a higher male birth ratio as families continue to adhere to traditional values of passing on the family name, although such influences have diminished over the years.

  • Professional Achievements:

Historically, certain professions were deemed more suitable for women, based on attributes like caregiving and patience. Today, Taiwan's evolving education system, changing economic landscape, and increased awareness of women's rights have dismantled gender-based restrictions in the workplace, allowing women to excel in a wider range of careers.

  • Cultural Diversity:

Taiwan's multicultural society boasts diverse gender identities, social classes, races, and religions, creating a rich tapestry of cultural attributes. Embracing this diversity and the values of coexistence and mutual respect have become defining traits of the Taiwanese people.

  • Indigenous Heritage:

Taiwan's population comprises both Han Chinese and Indigenous communities, with efforts to preserve and revive traditional cultures. The government's recognition and respect for diverse cultures play a vital role in ensuring the sustainable development of Indigenous heritage.

  • Global Family- Foreign Spouses in Taiwan:

The rise of cross-border marriages has led to the emergence of a multicultural society in Taiwan. The influx of foreign spouses has added vibrant colors to Taiwan's cultural landscape and expanded its consumer markets, enriching the country's cultural vibrancy.

  • Inclusivity and Respect- LGBTQ+ Rights:

In the 21st century, Taiwan's LGBTQ+ movement has fostered an environment of increased social acceptance and media representation, promoting understanding, inclusivity, and respect for LGBTQ+ rights.
