In November 1996, well-known women’s rights activist Peng Wan-ru was murdered. The case remains unsolved, but the tragedy raised public awareness of women’s safety issues and later developed into the enactment of the Sexual Assault Crime Prevention Act in 1997. In memory of Peng’s contribution to women’s rights, activists and advocacy groups organized a rally in December 1996. With more than 20,000 participants, the crowd marched the streets for the issue of women’s safety as well as other marginalized groups. |
