1998

In 1998, the Domestic Violence Prevention Act was promulgated, making Taiwan the first country in Asia to adopt such act and civil protection order system.

1996

In November 1996, well-known women’s rights activist Peng Wan-ru was murdered. The case remains unsolved, but the tragedy raised public awareness of women’s safety issues and later developed into the enactment of the Sexual Assault Crime Prevention Act in 1997. 

In memory of Peng’s contribution to women’s rights, activists and advocacy groups organized a rally in December 1996. With more than 20,000 participants, the crowd marched the streets for the issue of women’s safety as well as other marginalized groups.

1994

Opened in 1994, Fembooks was the first feminist bookstore for the women movement in the Chinese community. Fembooks represented important enlightenment for a new female generation.
